At around 12:45GMT an eruption started just to the north of Grindavík, a town on the Reykjanes peninsula.
The eruption is along a fissure which runs roughly north to south and is currently around 3.0-3.5km long. It is about 15km from Keflavík airport and about 30km from Reykjavík.
The lava is flowing towards the evacuated town of Grindavík and the Blue Lagoon (also evacuated), which means it is travelling away from the city of Reykjavík. The eruption is not expected to affect flights and transportation to and from the country.
Due to the recent eruptions on the Reykjanes peninsula and the unpredictability of when further volcanic activity will occur, the route for the ecoRally Iceland does not enter this part of the country.
The event is still going ahead as planned and we look forward to welcoming you all. If you have any concerns, please get in touch by emailing info@erally.is or contacting the organising team via the telephone numbers found in the supplementary regulations.
